Dana Downs plays guitar and sings her songs on her new CD Subterfuge
with a soulful folk-rock sweetness and a barroom sassiness developed in Athens,
Georgia, where we both went to school. Songwriter Robert Waldrop (of the B52s' "Roam")
says her "singing is like a Greek chorus on a stage where I see the epic
and we are all heroes." Songs
include her River Trilogy, written for the opening of the South Carolina Aquarium; a portion
of the proceeds from the recording go to the South Carolina Coastal Conservation League to
benefit the ACE Basin, one of the most pristine ecosystems in the world. The ten original
tracks also include the acoustic rocker, "Smilla," a Civil War ballad, a modern waltz,
and the punk-folk "100 Years of Solitude." $15
